South Italian Red-Figure Mug

Circa 325-300 BC

Description:  Vibrant single-handled mug (oinochoe type 8A) with a woman of fashion in the style of the Menzies Group.  The pear-shaped body sits on a low ring foot with wide flared offset lip and small ring handle created by two applied round-in-section pieces fused together and tied in a knot at the center.  The woman faces left and wears an intricate saccos with four rows of pattern applied in black and white slip.  Framing her forehead is a stephane.  She is also adorned with dangling earrings and a single necklace, both in applied white.  Her hair is tied on top of her head with a few curled tendrils hanging from the bun and at her temples. Flanking the woman are scrolling tendrils, and there is an elaborate palmette beneath the handle.  The everted rim is decorated beneath with radiating black lines and above with a black wave pattern.  Three concentric bands encircle the foot with two more beneath.

Height:  3.25 in. (8.3 cm)

Condition:  Intact with a minor chip to the rim.  Rich glossy black glaze with nicely preserved details.

Provenance:  Formerly in a private Swiss collection acquired in the 1970s-80s.

Reference:  See The Red-Figured Vases of Apulia, Volume II: Late Apulian (Oxford University 1982) by A.D. Trendall & A. Cambitoglou, pl. 312, no. 3 for a similar mug by the Menzies Painter.

Price: $ 2,300
