Exquisitely Detailed Gold Hoop Earring with Goose

Circa Circa 3rd-2nd Century BC

Description:  Beautiful finely detailed gold hoop earring with a goose at the front. The goose is formed of strong sheet gold. Its head is turned slightly with curved beak and circular eyes. Its chest is decorated with intricate filigree consisting of bordered rosettes with tongue pattern formed by a single thin strand of gold. The tail is accented with delicate strands of gold enhancing the pattern of the feathers. The bird stands on a two-tiered pedestal with round upper tier and squared bottom tier, each bordered with filigree. Atop the goose’s head is a circular recess outlined with band of filigree, above which is a lovely elaborate rosette with intricate tendrils which serve as a base for an Isis crown with solar disc and feathers also recessed for inlay. Tiny loop atop the feathers joining to the large hoop of the earring. Superb published example of exceptional ancient craftsmanship. Included is a copy of Kunst der Antike in which the earring is published.  Greek, dating from the Hellenistic Period. 

Height of Goose:  0.8 in. (2 cm) Earring Diameter: 1.5 in. (3 cm)

Condition:   The hoop has been professionally rejoined. Exquisite detail and craftsmanship.

Provenance:  Formerly in the Bochberg Collection.

Published:   This important object has been published as no. 423A in Kunst der Antike: Schätze aus Norddeutdchem Privatbesitz (1977) by W. Hornbostel.
