| Egyptian ColgateThe recent discovery of what is believed to be the oldest known recipe for toothpaste has caused a sensation at a dental conference in Vienna. The Egyptian document, written in Greek, in the fourth century AD is part of the largest but as yet un-catalogued collection of Egyptian papyri, stone and clay tablets in existence, formed by the Habsburg Empire in 1878 and is currently residing in the basement of the National Library of Vienna.. The combination of one drachma of rock salt, two drachmas of mint, one drachma of dried iris flower along with 20 grains of pepper was mixed with saliva to form ‘a powder for white and perfect teeth.’ The modern dental community is impressed despite the formula’s gum bleeding side effects, believing it to be ‘a big improvement on some of the soap toothpastes used much later.’
